The South Gippsland Game Fishing Club was formed in 1976 and was the brainchild of local Leongatha fisherman Roy Fisher.

After fishing the Bermagui 40th anniversary game fishing tournament in February of that year with success Roy felt on his return that there was much need and interest from local fishermen to start a local game fishing club.

An advert in the local paper and a notice on the local pubs notice board asking for expressions of interest for prospective members was made. A day was booked at the Leongatha RSL for people to express their interest was made.

The night of the meeting was held to a packed house where Roy hosted the meeting with guests from the Victorian based Tunny Club. They were Ian Cutler (president) and Leo Tyquin (secretary). They spoke on club administration and game fishing angling rules.

A provisional committee was formed during the evening. The provisional committee met a few days later at Roy’s house to draw up a constitution and angling rules for the club. There were a few suggestions what name the club should be called and it was decided that it be called the South Gippsland Game Fishing Club.

The club officially came into being on the 31st May 1976.

A couple of months later, Roy Fisher (president of the SGGFC) Ian Cutler (President of the Swordfish and Tunny Club) and Dick Stumbles (President of the VGFC) got their heads together proposing to form the Victorian Game Fishing Association which would be the governing body of game fishing clubs in Victoria and to affiliate with the Game Fishing Association of Australia which is the governing body of all game fishing clubs in Australia. By doing this we can catch fish in Victoria and have them recognised as Victorian records. At this stage these were the only game fishing clubs in Victoria and a meeting was held at Ian Cutler’s house in Brighton with elected delegates from each club. After several meetings a constitution was drafted for the Victorian Association and approved by GFAA and the Game Fishing Association Victoria came into being.
